I don’t know why people keep saying original vinyl copies of this album sound bad I bought my orange vinyl copy of this in 1994 and when I heard freinds play cd copies of it I definitely appreciated having it on vinyl it sounds amazing to this day a little noisy but the anologue sheen still shines through I haven’t heard the new copies but the originals sound ???? great!
Tat
Anyone compared this with the QRP-pressing? I have this one and like it, but sounds a bit compressed, perhaps? Considering getting the QRP one ...
Nawenadet
Some of the art work in the booklet show guite some similarities with the artwork of Alice in Chain - Dirt album. I sometimes have difficulties with distorted gitares en voice on vinyl because this suggests issues with your records or needle :-)
Yanki
Cristal clear pressing, but the mixing is terrible, saturated and overcompressed, and bass is all over the place, sometimes booming quite a bit (as ALL Soundgarden mixes from the 90s... for some reason). Frankly, I think the digital versions sound a bit better.
Nten
I bought mine from Europe and is labeled as the 180g version. I weighed my vinyl slabs using digital scales. 198 grams for A/B and 200 grams for C/D. Could it be that there actually aren’t two differently weighted versions of this reissue?
Frosha
My GZ pressing weighs 200g each as well. Maybe both QRP and GZ pressed 200g in fact.
Inerrace
I've listened to this album a gazillion times on cassette & CD and got tired of waiting for a better pressing (original LP isn't supposed to be that great anyway) but I was pretty afraid to get this release after all the (bad) press the remaster got...I was betting that the vinyl version might sound a little better, and it seems i was right. They certainly had a heavy hand on the 'loudness' factor since the listening experience can be a little tiring depending on your system and general state... but we're talking about a pretty heavy AND a 73 min long record after all!As for the pressing, everything is good: heavy records, flat and quiet. Artwork has been redone but not too horribly. Just a bit disappointed about the missing lyrics in the booklet. If you can get it for 25 bucks or less, it should do the trick until you get a '320' pressing.
Shou
Phenomenal pressing, the quality is crazy. Talk about a solid sounding album.
Vit
Nice copy plays great for that money ... so do not remember Soundgarden always naturally sounds darker :-)
Mautaxe
The overall sound of this version is good, but unfortunately there is a noticeable glitch in "Like suicide". So annoying to pay big bucks for these "putrandommultipleof5here" aniversary pressings that lack any kind of quality control (ironically then they call it audiophile pressing).By the way, R.I.P. Chris Cornell. So sad to lose such a talent.
Yggfyn
Usually not a fan of GZ Vinyl pressings, but this one sounds good. Can't really fault the SQ, but I'm looking forward to comparing it to the 320 pressing if ever I get the opportunity
Lbe
I will respond on my own question; I bought this repress last week. The main difference between this and the 2004 repress (wich I have on .flac) is that the bass is all over the place, sometimes booming like "Dexter_prog" said + the signal is over-driven and saturated; you have a brick of sound coming straight to your face. This isn't a hip-hop album, so why ?! Why don't we let the music breathe ?For me this was an opportunity to do a proper remastering, but they failed.Today I give it back to the store and have my refund...still on research for a nice pressing.
Skyway
Can you, please, go further in your explaination ? What are the little differences between this repress and the 2004 ? Thanks
Kare
Don’t bother, I have the German 320 and I bought this pressing second hand cheap. There is really no outstanding difference, I would say the 320 is slightly better but not by much and not worth the extra cost the 320 warrants.
Niwield
I grew up with the original LP (european blue vinyl LP) which now bacame very thin from the use (listened to it over 2500 times :-). But this one has KILLER SOUND. Compressed guitars - brighter drums & vocals. I don't know what to say which is 'better'...the only i can say is that i love this album. Nice remastered sound BUT i prefer the original front artwork - gatefold pictures.
Jieylau
Anyone have DR values for this reissue? How does it compare to the original vinyl release?
GoodLike
not very good man its very compressed its at an 8
Gugrel
Very happy to have this 20th anniversary edition of Soundgarden's Superunknown on vinyl. Overall, it is a great pressing with good, clear sound. In particular, I noticed Matt Cameron's drumming and Chris Cornell's singing was more clear and, just in general, the vinyl sounds much better than the CD release. Very happy overall. My problem with this is the booklet included. As other reviewers have said, I am also missing the lyrics to some of the tracks, so do be aware of that. Anyhow, apart from this, a great reissue. Sounds great.
Bluecliff
Is your copy also missing the lyrics for Mailman, Superunknown, Head Down and Black Hole Sun?
GEL
Yep, mine is missing the lyrics for those songs too.
Dancing Lion
They forgot to print the lyrics on the 5th page of the booklet (2014 180g European Version)
Ndav
Mine also dont have the lyrics of those songs. But it still 12 page booklet as per info on the cover.
Precious
It's like I have no middle page in the booklet, so no lyrics for those songs in my copy
Mr_KiLLaURa
Mine doesn't have the lyrics for those songs either.
Dondallon
All there.
Mash
My record 1 is not flat.. yours ?
RUsich155
Well, this is one the records that NEVER grow old, feels fresh like a tendril even more than 20 years under the belt! Pure magic.
Oso
I have seen lots of unofficial copies of this right now.. Please ask for matrix information if ordering.. official copie also has a insert booklet and unofficial ones perhaps have a single sided or one time folded insert. Nonlegal Looks new/mint but the matrix is empty!!
Early Waffle
facelift, i think it might be this version? http://www.discogs.com/marketplace?release_id=5783331&ev=rb
Tholmeena
Mine has a sticker on the front that says 200 gram vinyl remastered from original Analogue Tapes. So is 180 gram or 200?
Tto
Whilst stating 180g on the hype sticker of my Euro press, side A/B actually weighs 198g and C/D weighs 200g. The question then is that is there really two differently weighted versions of this reissue?
Kizshura
US Pressings are 200g, I have the Euro pressing, which has 180g remastered from the original analogue tapes on the sticker.
Nirn
So what are everyone's thoughts on this? I've listened through this album hundreds of times since it was released in my grade school days, so needless to say I was excited to hear how the remastering would change the sound.First thing that hits me is that the bass is REALLY cranked up on this. In my estimation maybe a little too much, but coming off of years of listening to the last version I suppose any small change will sound different. That being said, I feel like the bass guitar was turned from 5 to 11.The drums feel a little less punchy than they did on the original (CD) master as well. On the original, to me it felt like Matt Cameron was jumping out of the disc -- here the drums are just kind of "there".I will say though that Chris's voice comes through in greater clarity, if not presence, than on the original. It's interesting hearing some of the additional vocal details that I don't really remember being present before.I'm going to have to listen through this another 10 times or so before I make a final judgment, but for now I'll give it a solid "eh". There's good and bad to be found here I think.
