Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell. Live recording from October 1967 Severance Hall, Cleveland, Ohio. From the album by Sony Classical 1991. Symphony No. 6 in A minor TragicI. Allegro energico, ma non troppo. Heftig, aber markig. 6 in A minor by Gustav Mahler is a symphony in four movements, composed in 1903 and 1904 revised 1906 scoring repeatedly revised. Mahler conducted the work's first performance at the Saalbau concert hall in Essen on May 27, 1906. It is sometimes referred to by the nickname Tragische Tragic. Mahler composed the symphony at what was apparently an exceptionally happy time in his life, as he had married Alma Schindler in 1902, and during the course of the work's composition his second. Recorded in October 1967 in concert at Cleveland's Severance Hall, this performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6 is an attractive but often overlooked gem, perhaps because it has been overshadowed by more famous and sensational recordings. George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra give a rather strict and meticulous reading of what many consider Mahler's most coherently structured symphony, and their tightness and control are utterly at odds with frenzied, hyper-romantic interpretations. Recorded live by George Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra in Oct. 1967 as with some otherwise excellent recordings, the 1st movement repeat is cut - Barbirolli did the same in his magnificent performances Mahler: Symphony No. 6, Strauss: Ein Heldenleben . One of the top recordings of this work from the early days, though I prefer the Barbirolli and, either of the two live versions above the studio sessions. Mahler: Symphony No. 6 Tragic track list.
