The Rambler is the 56th album by American country singer Johnny Cash, released in 1977 on Columbia Records. A concept album about travelling, its songs, in between, include dialogue between Cash and hitchhikers picked up or other people he meets during the album's cross-country trip. It is the last, and one of the few Johnny Cash albums to only feature songs written by Cash himself. It is also his last non-religious concept album, and was included on the Bear Family box set Come Along and Ride This. The Rambler - Johnny Cash. Every song on The Rambler is tied together by dialogues between Cash and the hitchhikers, which means the record never develops a sense of momentum. Furthermore, the songs themselves are slight, without much musically or lyrically to reccommend them. In all, it's an ambitious, overwrought failure that is fascinating for one listen, but nearly impossible to sit through more than once. Johnny Cashs The Rambler is best approached as a radio play or a film soundtrack minus the film. Alternating between dialogue and music, the 1977 album unreels the story of an unnamed drifter played by Cash driving from the East Coast to California in hopes of shaking the memory of lost love. Along the way, he picks up a hitchhiker, has a bad night in a bar room, and meets up with a cowgirl harboring a deadly secret. Cash who wrote the albums script as well as its songs fills his tormented character with a brooding charisma lightened by flashes of downhome humor.
