Chas Jankel is the debut solo studio album by the English singer and multi-instrumentalist Chaz Jankel. It was originally released in 1980, on the label A&M. Ian Dury and The Blockheads's first and only album without Jankel, Laughter, was released the same year. The first track on the album Ai No Corrida, was covered by Quincy Jones a year later in 1981 and was a UK chart hit for him. The song has also been covered by the Nylons and Laura More with Uniting Nations. Chas Jankel was a keyboardist with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, acting as a co-writer with Dury on most of the bands best known songs during the British funknew wave band's commercial peak the late '70s. Jankel was responsible for much of the funk influences in the Blockheads music, and that love for rhythmic music was a large part of his solo career. He released several solo albums in the early 80s, including Chasanova, Questionnaire, Chazablanca, and Looking At You. ALTON EDWARDS - Take Me Extended Version 1983. Ian Dury & the Blockheads were at their height when songwriting keyboardist Chas Jankel inked a deal for a solo album with A&M. With a winner on their hands, the label gave the artist total control, and all on the strength of two demos - Ai No Corrida and Am I Honest with Myself Really The former was to become a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, just not for Jankel instead his song stormed into the chart via a cover by Quincy Jones. Album: Chas Jankel, 2005. To many people he is largely known as Ian Dury's groovy sidekick in the Blockheads an ongoing love affair. But there is another side to Jankel: that of songwriter and solo performer and thanks to cult club hits like 3,000,000 Synths and Glad To Know You underground dance hero. Working alongside studio wiz, Phlip Bagenal, who not only engineered many of his best works, and with whom he also founded Eastcote Studios, Jankel was responsible for some of best and most experimental dance records to come from these shores. Ai No Corrida. Single by Chaz Jankel. from the album Chas Jankel. 10 August 1980 1980-08-10. Ai No Corrida is a song written by Chaz Jankel and Kenny Young, first recorded in 1980 and featured on Jankel's self-titled debut album for A&M Records. The title of the song was taken from the French-Japanese film In the Realm of the Senses, originally titled Ai no Korīda 愛のコリーダ, and means Corrida of love in Japanese. The erotic art film, directed by Nagisa Oshima, was a fictionalized and sexually explicit treatment of an incident from 1930s Japan
